Raven Lord era para mí hasta ahora, una banda desconocida. Tuve la oportunidad de escuchar su disco debut y me pareció muy bueno (aquí la reseña) y me dieron ganas de saber más de ellos. El resultado, es esta entrevista aCSABA ZVEKAN (cantante y fundador de la banda) en inglés y castellano.

–          En primer lugar. ¿Por qué “Raven Lord”?

JAMIE MALLENDER en bajo, de la banda del ex cantante de BLACK SABBATH, Tony Martin.El nombre RAVEN LORD es una figura mitológica, pero tiene atributos muy modernos que nos gustan aún hoy. La banda se formó en marzo de 2011, después de que dejé Killing Machine. Hemos tocado en algunos festivales importantes y también fuimos los teloneros de AC/DC  en su gira Black Ice Tour,  en 2010. Yo estaba entonces un poco más hambriento de metal así que decidi formar mi propia banda y fui en busca de los correctos compañeros de banda.

–          ¿Quién escribe las canciones? ¿O es un trabajo en equipo?

 Este es un trabajo en equipo. Todo el mundo se escribe su parte después de que haya algún fundamento de melodía y música arreglada por mí. Fundimos todo y por los estilos individuales de los integrantes, la cosa puede variar. Quien supervisa es uno de los productores para que la idea de las estancias de sonido y el estilo quede como en un principio se pretendía. Para el DESCENT TO THE UNDERWOLRD, era yo quien estaba haciendo la producción. Puede ser diferente para futuras grabaciones. Para el primer disco que fue difícil de recrear algo que sólo yo sabía cómo debía sonar. La banda no siempre sabía lo que yo tenía en mente. Necesitabas algunas explicaciones primero. Ahora que ya estamos trabajando en nuevas canciones para el segundo disco es mucho más fácil seguir ese estilo. La rutina sería como con muchas bandas de metal con las que trabajé. Los guitarristas traían algunos riffs, me permitiría repetir algunas cosas y hacer que la voz pueda encajar. Cambiando algunas progresiones de acordes para que pueda encajar la melodía que tengo en mente. También me gustaría cantar algunos riffs para darle la chispa inicial y de vez en cuando me gustaría grabar pistas de guitarra por mi cuenta y entregárselas al guitarrista de resolver de una manera más detallada y mejor. El resto proviene de todos los miembros del Raven Lord con sus estilos individuales y se funde en esta losa brillante del metal.

–          Éste es su álbum debut. ¿cómo ha sido la repercusión hasta ahora?

 Increíblemente grande. Verás que mi idea principal era tocar en festivales por toda Europa y convertirnos en una banda de gira. Para eso necesitaba un lanzamiento de un CD. Nunca pensé que este producto recibiría tanto interés de la prensa, los fans y oyentes.

–          Cuando escuchamos el disco, nos damos cuenta de que el estilo de la banda es el heavy metal clásico y power metal también, nos gustaría saber qué bandas son lo que te gustan…

 Hay tantas influencias, todos y cada uno de nosotros las tenemos. Nos han comparado con los grandes nombres de metal. En cuanto a las voces y el sonido en general estamos muy influidos por Dio, Black sabbath, Judas Priest, Malmsteen y TNT, también con cantantes como Ian Gillan, Glen Hughes y hasta Chris Thompson.

–          Fredrik Nordström (At The Gates, Arch Enemy, Nightrage, In Flames, Opeth and Dream Evil), produjo y mezcló el álbum. ¿Lo conocías desde antes? ¿Cómo fue la experiencia con él?

 Las grabaciones fueron hechas por cada uno de nosotros en los países de residencia de nuestras bandas. Esto tiene algunas ventajas importantes en la gestión del tiempo, pero también tenía algunos inconvenientes. Yo lo haría de nuevo para la pre-producción, ya que ahorra mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, para la producción de grabación y post, prefiero ir a un estudio más grande y trabajar con un productor en el establecimiento. No hay que olvidar que todo esto está en función de la cantidad de presupuesto disponible. En este primer disco no teníamos un presupuesto. Nosotros nos las arreglamos para hacer las grabaciones del álbum en los estudios de nuestras casas y luego tuvo que mezclarse con Fredrik Nordström en Suecia. Más tarde le dimos un buen pulimiento en los estudios de masterización de Maor Appelbaum en Los Angeles. ¡Los dos ingenieros hicieron un excelente trabajo!

–          ¿Están tocando en vivo?

 Sí, RAVEN LORD está creciendo muy rápidamente. yo empecé reservar algunos shows para la banda por mi cuenta. Hasta que un día me di cuenta de la carga de trabajo era cada vez más grande, demasiado. Entonces le pedí ayuda a una agencia muy profesional que ahora está trabajando para conseguir shows en algunos festivales en Europa. A finales de este año, alrededor de octubre, debemos anunciar nuestra primera gira por Europa y UK. Una gran fiesta ya está confirmada en Tongeren, Bélgica. Es la R-MINE METALFEST 2013. Vamos a estar tocando en el escenario principal el sábado el 22 de junio de 2013 con bandas como Symphony X, Rhapsody, fire and Hell. Esto va a ser una explosión. –          Además de que son músicos con experiencia (por ejemplo, Csaba ha estado tocando en bandas desde el 80′s) y no estoy hablando de ustedes. ¿Cómo ves la escena del heavy metal en Europa? ¿Crees que es complicado salir, para una nueva banda?

Creo que nunca fue fácil conseguir un contrato discográfico o incluso ir de gira. RAVEN LORD estaba en el momento adecuado con el producto adecuado. Como he dicho, el interés en nosotros es alto. Hemos estado trabajando de manera individual en nuestras carreras durante tanto tiempo. Supongo que era nuestro turno. La escena Heavy Metal esta vivita y coleando. Hay un montón de nuevos estilos y nuevas bandas interesantes que salen. Esto es fresco. Al mismo tiempo, metal clásico con grandes melodías agresivas producidas y envasadas con la tecnología moderna se ha convertido en una rareza. RAVEN LORD llena la necesidad de ello y lo puede ofrecer.

–          Rich Smith acaba de unirse a la banda. ¿Cómo fue elegido?

Yo no quise quitarle el baterista a nadie. Así que cuando leí que PowerQuest estaba cerrando sus puertas para siempre vi la oportunidad de conseguir este baterista increíblemente bueno. No dude en preguntarle. Ya sabíamos que podía tocar nuestra música. Así que fue realmente sólo una cuestión de ver si él quería estar adentro.

–          ¿Cuales son los siguientes pasos a seguir para RAVEN LORD?

Nos centraremos en tocar Festivales de Verano de ahora en adelante seguido por una gira en otoño. En medio hacemos entrevistas, prensa y estamos trabajando en el segundo álbum. A finales de este año, alrededor de octubre vamos a anunciar nuestra primera gira por Europa y UK.

–         First of all, why raven lord?

The name RAVEN LORD is a mytholgical figure but has very modern attributes that we would like even today. The band has been formed in March 2011 after I left KILLING MACHINE. We played some major festivals and were also the support band for AC/DC’s Black Ice tour in 2010. I was then hungry for some more metal so I found my own band and was looking for the right band mates.

–         Who writes the songs? Or is teamwork?

 This is teamwork. Everybody writes their part themsevles after there is some foundation of melody and music arranged by me. We melt everything together as the styles of the individual players might vary. One overseeing producer watches that the sound and style stays in the idea that originally was intended. For the DESCENT TO THE UNDERWOLRD is was me who was doing the producing. It might be different for future records. For the first record it was quiet difficult to create something that only I knew how it should sound. The players didn’t always know what I had in mind. It needed some explanations first. Now that we’re working on already new songs for the second record it’s much easier to follow that style. The routine would be like with many metal bands I worked with. The guitar players come up with some riffs, I then would piece them together so the length with the vocals can fit. Changing some chord progressions so I can fit my desired melody that I have in mind. I would also sing some riffs to give it the initial spark and occasionally I would record guitar tracks on my own and hand it to the guitarist to work it out in a more detailed and better fashion. The rest comes from all of the RAVEN LORD members with their individual styles and melts into this shiny slab of metal.

–         This is your debut album. How has been the impact of it so far?

 Incredibly great you see my main idea was to play festivals all over Europe and become a touring band. For that we needed a release of a CD. Never thought that this product would receive so much interest from the press, fans and listeners.

–         When we hear the album, we realize that the style of the band is the classic heavy metal and power metal  too, we would like to know which bands are what you like …
There are so many influences every and each of us have. We have been compared with the biggest names in metal. As for the vocals and overall sound I’m strongly influenced by Dio, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Malmsteen and, TNT but also with singers like Ian Gillen, Glen Hughes and even Chris Thompson.

–         Fredrik Nordström (At The Gates, Arch Enemy, Nightrage, In Flames, Opeth and Dream Evil), produced and mixed the album. Did you knew before? How was the experience with him?

The recordings were done all spread out at every bands members home country. This has some major advantages in time management but also had a few drawbacks. I would do it again for pre-production as it saves a lot of time. But for the recording and post production I prefer to go to a bigger studio and work with a producer on site. Let’s not forget that this is all depending on how much budget is available. On the first record we didn’t have a budget. We still managed to pull things off with recording the album in our home studios and then had it mixed with FREDRIK NORDSTROM in Sweden. Later we gave it a good polish in the mastering studios of MAOR APPELBAUM in Los Angeles. Both engineers were doing an excellent job!

–         Are you playing live?

Yes, RAVEN LORD is growing very rapidly and I started booking us some shows on my own. Until someday I realised the workload is getting too much. I asked for help with a very professional booking agent who now is working to get us on some festivals in Europe. Later this year around October we should announce our first EU/UK tour. One big festival is already confirmed in Tongeren, Belgium. It’s the R-MINE METALFEST 2013. We’re going to be playing the main stage Saturday the 22nd June 2013 with bands like Symphony X, Rhapsody Fire and Hell. This is going to be a blast. –         Besides that you are experienced musicians – for example, Csaba has been playing since the 80′s- and I’m not talking about you. How do you see the heavy metal scene in Europe? Do you think it is complicated emerge, for a new band?

I think it was never easy to get a record deal or even go on tour. RAVEN LORD was at the right time with the right product available. As I said the interest is high. We have been all working individually on our carrers for so long. I guess it was our turn now. The Heavy Metal Scene is fresh alive and kicking. There is plenty of new styles and cool new bands coming out. This is fresh. At the same time classic metal with great aggressive melodies produced and packaged with modern technology has also become a rarity. RAVEN LORD fills the need for that and can deliver.

–         Rich Smith has just joined the band. How was it chosen?

I didn’t want to take away anybodys drummer. So when I read that PowerQuest was closing their doors for good and that there was the opportunity to get this incredibly good player. I didn’t hesitate to ask him. We already knew he could play our music. So it was really just a question about him RICH if he would be in.

–         What are the next steps for raven lord?

We will concentrate on playing Summer Festivals from now on followed by a tour in fall. In between we do interviews, press and are working on the second album. Later this year around October we will announce our first EU/UK tour.

–         A final message for the readers of mp3, webzine …
